Description: | The Richelieu beer is brewed as a dark lager. New Magnolia brewed this historical Richelieu beer as close to the original recipes, but with a few modern touches. As technology has improved significantly since 1915, when the earliest Richelieu recipe was brewed, there have been enormous advancements in malt product quality and consequently, product specifications. Of the 18 Richelieu brew logs they received, 15 recipes called for a small amount of black malt, combined with standard 6-row barley malt and caramel malt. Eight of the recipes called for “domestic rice” as an adjunct to lighten the beer a touch, while 11 recipes called for “refined corn,”. Raw material availability is most likely the reason for differences in recipes. Hops, within the recipes called for Bohemian, Herrschaft, and Saaz. New Magnolia researched the “Herrschaft” hop variety, but were not able to source this hop. Due to similarity and availability, they opted for Saaz hops. For yeast….given that Richelieu was made in accordance with methods perfected in the town of Pilsen, Bohemia, they selected yeast from that region. | |
